The calculator does not provide a mandatory value, but a sensible starting range. Start with the lower amount, observe the effect calmly, and only increase gradually.
Start with the minimum amount
Especially with a new variety or new batch, the lower range is almost always the better start. This keeps the effect more controllable.
Preparation changes the result
Traditional, blender, and instant do not deliver the same extraction. Therefore, the calculator consciously adjusts the range to the chosen method.
Do not add immediately
Kava does not build up instantly. Wait a moment after the first sip before re-dosing.

Traditional preparation
If you want to implement the starting range practically, the classic kneading method is the best reference.

Powder, instant, and extracts behave differently. These differences are important for dosing.

Important Notes
- • Always drink Kava on an empty stomach (3-4 hours after eating)
- • Start with a lower dosage and gradually increase
- • Reverse Tolerance: The effects may be weaker the first few times
- • Never combine Kava with alcohol or medications
- • In case of liver disease or pregnancy: No Kava
Factors Influencing Dosage
Different strains have varying Kavalactone contents. A 5-star strain like Loa Waka requires less powder than a milder 3-star strain like Pouni Ono.
Heavier individuals generally require more Kava for the same effect. The calculator adjusts the recommendation accordingly.
Instant/Micronized Kava is more concentrated than Medium Grind. The blender method extracts slightly more efficiently than traditional kneading.
Due to 'Reverse Tolerance', experienced users often need less Kava for the same effect. Beginners should start with low doses.
Kava Kava Dosage: Powder, Instant and Session Goal
The appropriate Kava dose is not a fixed gram number. Variety, preparation, body weight, experience, nutritional state, and desired effect influence how much powder is sensible and how strong the session turns out.
Start low, increase cleanly
Beginners benefit from conservative starting amounts because batch, variety, and personal sensitivity can vary greatly. A calm, clear effect is a better goal than aiming for the highest gram numbers.
Think of powder and instant separately
Instant Kava is more concentrated and therefore is not dosed 1:1 like Medium-Grind powder. Those who confuse both forms quickly end up significantly above the sensible amount.
Side effects are often dosage signals
Nausea, extreme fatigue, or motor instability often indicate too high a quantity or an unsuitable session. In such cases, one should not redose but rather set the next application lower.
Session goal changes the amount
For a clear, sociable Heady session, dosing is often different than for a heavy, physical Evening session. Variety profile and time of day are therefore part of every reasonable dosing decision.
Important Pages on Dosage
Traditional Preparation
The classic extraction with water is the reference for many dosage tables. Those using Medium-Grind should understand this method before comparing gram numbers.
Read Traditional MethodCalculate Instant Separately
Instant is more concentrated and requires its own rules of thumb. The subpage helps to avoid confusion between powder and instant.
Understand Instant DosageConsider Variety Profile
Heady, Heavy, and Balanced varieties feel very different even at similar gram numbers. Knowledge of varieties prevents gross misjudgments.
Compare VarietiesInterpret Side Effects Correctly
If a session turns out too heavy, the safety page helps to distinguish between normal dose reactions and real warning signals.
